What Do Medical Assistants Do?

Medical assistants provide office and clinical support in medical offices and hospital departments. Their duties can range widely, from medical records maintenance to removing stitches from a wound. They need to have a basic understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical procedures across a range of specialties.

Tasks for medical assistants vary by employer, but may include:

  • Taking patients’ medical history and vital signs
  • Calling in referrals or prescriptions
  • Maintaining medical supply inventories
  • Basic wound care
  • Giving vaccinations under the supervision of a physician or nurse (as permitted by state law)
  • Collecting samples for laboratory testing
  • Performing basic lab tests, including electrocardiograms (ECGs)
