What Do Chairside Assistants Do?
Chairside assistants are dental assistants whose duties focus on dental procedure support. They work alongside the dentist or hygienist during cleanings, fillings, dental surgeries, and other procedures. They also perform duties such as taking dental impressions or x-rays.
Chairside assistants may perform the following tasks on the job:
- Helping patients get comfortable in the chair
- Preparing the work area and instrument trays
- Inspecting and sterilizing dental instruments
- Handing instruments to the dentist during procedures
- Performing suction during procedures
- Taking impressions and producing casts of patients’ teeth
- Taking and processing x-rays (as permitted by state law)
- Performing coronal polishing to remove surface stains from teeth
