What Do Practical Nurses Do?

Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) provide direct patient care under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs), physicians, and other healthcare professionals. They can be found working in hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities and any other place where people need healthcare.

Specific duties vary by employer but may include:

  • Dressing or changing wounds
  • Helping patients dress or bathe
  • Monitoring vital signs
  • Collecting samples for laboratory tests
  • Update patient records
  • Discuss patient care with RNs and doctors
